6 Best Soy-Free And Gluten-Free Vegan Protein Powders

Are you looking to build muscle on a vegetarian or vegan diet?

Or maybe you just want some more plant-based protein in your life?

The best way to achieve that is, first and foremost, by eating nutritious, mostly whole, plant foods.

Once you’ve got that down, however, it won’t hurt to add some supplements to your regimen.

When it comes to having a convenient source of muscle-building nutrition, nothing beats a high-quality protein powder.

Just put some water or your favorite type of milk (like almond) in a shaker, add a few scoops of the powder, shake it for a few seconds, and you’re done!

When you’re on the go, or when you need to supplement a meal with extra protein, this can be an absolute life-saver.

Plant-Based Nutrition Is On The Rise

A lot of people are now beginning to look for plant-based alternatives to the regular whey shakes.

Thankfully, more and more of them have popped up in recent years.

When you look around the market, though, there’s a lot of soy to be found — a lot.

If you want to cut back on soy, or eliminate it completely from your diet, your choices are a bit restricted.

And, when you finally discover alternatives, they’ll more than likely include some sort of gluten-based replacement — another turnoff for many.

With that being said, there are a few excellent soy-free and gluten-free vegan protein powders out there.

You just have to know where to find them.

Luckily for you, we’ve already done the searching, tasting, and testing for you!

In this post, I’ll share with you the 6 best soy-free and gluten-free vegan protein powders you can buy online.

1. MRM Veggie Elite Protein

Let’s start with the best of the bunch — MRM’s Veggie Elite Performance Protein.

I’ve tried dozens of vegan powders through the years.

This one became my favorite about 2 years ago, when I had to order a different product due to Sunwarrior being out of stock (more on that one soon).

As of this writing, the powder boasts a solid 4-star rating on Amazon with over 1300 customer reviews.

Ingredients and Serving Sizes

Veggie Elite has an impressive list of ingredients — both in terms of what it has and what it doesn’t have.

For starters, there are zero artificial colors sweeteners added — NO aspartame or acesulfame.

It’s also soy-free, gluten-free, and non-GMO certified.

The powder is made from raw pea and brown rice protein, with a balanced amount of every essential and non-essential amino acid.

It’s also easily digested, since MRM have added a mix of enzymes to help with the breakdown (Digest-All VP enzyme blend).

Each tub of Veggie Elite contains 30 servings, which will give you 24 grams of protein each.

Taste and Texture

You can choose between 3 different flavors:

  • Chocolate mocha
  • Vanilla bean
  • Cinnamon bun

My personal favorite is the chocolate mocha, but it should be noted that I’m kind of a “chocoholic”.

The mocha flavor is a tad stronger than what your average, run-of-the-mill whey offers.

If you only like light, milky chocolate, it might be a bit too much for you.

The vanilla bean is my second favorite — it’s basic, sweet, and familiar.

It should be mixed with less liquid than the other two, since it’s slightly more subtle.

Finally, the cinnamon bun is alright if you like, well, cinnamon buns!

Personally, I found it the least palatable of the 3, with a somewhat-unpleasant aftertaste that seems a bit artificial, for lack of a better word.

All 3 of the flavors have more or less the same texture.

When shaken properly, it’s relatively smooth and painless to chug down.

I didn’t find any of them overly grainy, nor did they tend to form clumps (as so many other powders do).

Overall Verdict

5 stars rating

When considering the excellent price point, plus the nutrition, taste, and texture, Veggie Elite is my number one pick on this list.

If you’re looking for an affordable, soy-free, gluten-free vegan protein powder, it’s decidedly a first-rate choice.

2. Sunwarrior Protein Warrior Blend

Sunwarrior is a high-quality brand that has been around for quite some time.

This was the second vegan protein powder I ever sampled (after some generic, store-bought soy stuff).

Even though I’ve tried many others through the years, Sunwarrior was my main choice before I switched to MRM Veggie Elite.

And there were, and still are, a number of good reasons for choosing it.

Ingredients and Serving Sizes

Sunwarrior’s Warrior Blend is known for using a variety of top-shelf protein sources.

In this powder, you’ll get a complete amino acid profile from:

  • Organic pea protein
  • Goji berries
  • Hemp seeds

They also include medium-chain triglycerides from coconuts, which are supposed to work alongside the other ingredients for a better effect.

While this last point may seem a bit obscure, there have indeed been some rat studies linking medium-chain triglycerides to a reduction in fat stores. (study)

However, more research involving human subjects will be needed before solid conclusions can be made.

The largest tub of Warrior Blend will provide you with 30 servings — each of which contains 27 grams of protein (the highest protein content on this list).

Taste and Texture

The Warrior Blend comes in a myriad of different flavors.

These are:

  • Mocha
  • Berry
  • Natural
  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate

I haven’t sampled the Mocha or Berry ones, but I’m very familiar with the remaining 3.

Choose the Natural powder if you want a more or less tasteless powder you can use in more elaborate smoothies and shakes.

Vanilla
is very soft and sweet — much similar to the Veggie Elite Vanilla Bean flavor.

Chocolate
is definitely my favorite one out of the 3 I’ve tried.

But, then again, I am partial to the coco, as mentioned earlier.

It’s definitely sweeter and slightly milder than Veggie Elite’s Mocha flavor.

If you’re big on chocolate milkshakes and ice creams, you’ll more than likely enjoy it a lot.

Warrior Blend is, for the most part, a very fine, smooth powder that’s easy to consume regularly.

However, it does have a tendency to clump up every now and again.

So, make sure you shake your bottle thoroughly to prevent getting chunky bits at the bottom.

Overall Verdict

5 stars rating

Sunwarrior’s Warrior Blend is another top-shelf option if you’re looking for soy-free protein powders.

While it clumps up from time to time, it has a mostly smooth and fine texture.

The Vanilla and Chocolate flavors taste almost like a high-quality milkshake, and the Natural option is perfect for homemade smoothies.

3. Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder

Orgain has truly managed to climb the ranks among the plant-based protein shakes.

Today, they are one of the leading brands, and can boast a solid 4-star average on Amazon with over 6000 reviews (as of this writing).

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, this might be the one for you.

Ingredients and Serving Sizes

For the protein content, Orgain uses its own patented blend made from:

  • Organic peas
  • Brown rice
  • Chia seeds

It contains no added sugars, but uses stevia to give it a sweet taste instead.

Each container comes with 20 servings.

The slight downside to this powder is that each serving only has 21 grams of protein, compared to Veggie Elite’s 24 and Warrior Blend’s 27.

Even so, the price is usually lower than the two aforementioned products (depending on the seller).

You’ll just have to contend with a few more scoops if you want a larger protein load — not a big deal.

Taste and Texture

When it comes to having a diverse selection of flavors, few protein powders can beat Orgain.

These are the ones you can choose from:

  • Creamy chocolate fudge
  • Chocolate peanut butter cup
  • Peanut butter
  • Iced matcha latte
  • Vanilla bean
  • Vanilla almond
  • Natural unsweetened

If I had to pick a favorite among them, it would be the peanut butter one.

I do, as mentioned, really enjoy chocolate.

Even so, it’s nice with a bit of variety every now and again, right?

I found that Orgain’s peanut butter flavor combos really well with almond milk.

In fact, the combo is so tasty that you almost forget it’s a health-and-fitness shake.

The Natural unsweetened powder is more or less tasteless, but with a hint of earthiness.

It’s a great choice if you want to add some protein to a fruit smoothie at home, for example.

The texture of the powder (all flavors) is very smooth, and mixes well with just 5 seconds of vigorous shaking.

Overall Verdict

4.5 star rating

Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein can be found on Amazon, as well as several retailers and health food shops.

It has a fair price point and high-quality ingredients.

There are more than enough flavors to choose from, and the powder mixes well without any noticeable clumping.

Bottom line:

Another contender for the top spot.

4. Evolve Protein Powder

Evolve is one of the most underrated vegan protein powders on the market.

It may be because they don’t market themselves as aggressively as some of the other vegan protein shakes.

If you didn’t read the label or product description closely, you might even mistake it for being another whey powder.

Rest assured, though, that Evolve Protein is a 100% soy-free, gluten-free, completely plant-based product.

Ingredients and Serving Sizes

Evolve Protein is made with non-GMO peas grown in the United States.

For sweetening, it uses refined, organic stevia extract.

The powder has quite a bit of fiber in it, sourced from non-GMO vegetables.

Per serving, you’ll get 10 grams of fiber, which is actually around 1/3 of the daily recommended minimum. (source)

Besides that, each serving will net you 20 grams of protein — a bit on the lower side, but still passable.

One regular container of Evolve will provide you with 20 servings.

Taste and Texture

Evolve only comes in the two classic variants of protein powder:

Chocolate and vanilla.

They both taste very similar to a regular milkshake.

However, sensitive tongues will detect a slightly-grainy texture (thanks to the high fiber content, no doubt).

Additionally, I found that it had a noticeable stevia aftertaste — especially the vanilla version.

It’s not a big deal for me, but if you dislike the sweetener, you might want to steer away.

Other than that, a very tasty shake, indeed.

Overall Verdict

4.5 star rating

A simple pea-protein blend that’s easy to like.

Should you want some added fiber content, Evolve Protein Powder has you covered there as well.

Even though there are only two flavors, they are both enjoyable.

If you’re used to vanilla or chocolate shakes, you’ll most likely chug these down with pleasure.

However, if you have very sensitive tastes, the slightly-grainy texture and hints of stevia aftertaste might put you off.

5. Vegansmart Plant Based Organic Pea Protein Powder

Another excellent pea-based protein powder.

With over 300 (and counting) customer reviews on Amazon, it still maintains an impressive 4.2 average star rating.

Vegansmart also has a similar, much more popular, product — the All-In-One Nutritional Shake.

As lauded as it is, I’m not a big fan of the added vitamin-and-mineral bomb you get with each serving.

Like always, we advocate that you get the lion’s share of your nutrition from whole foods — it’s simply the safest and most reliable way for most people.

Vegansmart’s Pea Protein Powder, though, is certainly worth recommending.

Ingredients and Serving Sizes

Vegansmart’s powder contains no artificial flavors, colorings, or sweeteners.

It also has an organic version available.

This is very rare, even among top-shelf powders, as it requires a very specific sourcing process.

Both versions of Vegansmart are, of course, also 100% free of both soy and gluten.

Each tub comes with around 15 servings, and each of them will provide you with 20 grams of protein.

The powder is also quite low in calories compared to many of its competitors — only 120 per serving.

Taste and Texture

Like with Evolve, you can choose between two flavors of Vegansmart Pea Protein:

Chocolate and vanilla.

Both of them are similar to Evolve when it comes to sweetness.

The texture is, for the most part, smooth.

However, you might notice a slight “chalkiness” in comparison to the top dogs, Veggie Elite and Sunwarrior.

All in all, though, it’s an enjoyable drink that’s easy to get used to.

Overall Verdict

4 stars rating

Not quite good enough to grab the highest rankings on this list, but still a great choice if you’ve tried all the others.

The organic versions are a godsend if you’re concerned about the purity of your powder.

Additionally, the low calorie count per serving makes it a nice addition to a weight loss diet plan.

6. Amazing Grass Protein Superfood

This is more of a meal replacement than a simple muscle-building shake.

Still, it’s worth a mention, since it can be used as either-or.

It has an outstanding average star rating of 4.2 based on over 900 customer reviews.

Although the label “superfood” has been overused to the tenth degree, this product may very well deserve it.

Ingredients and Serving Sizes

Compared to the other shakes on this list, Amazing Grass is a bit pricier.

However, when you look at what’s actually in it, you’ll understand why.

For starters, everything included in the product is certified organic, which is a nice bonus.

When it comes to the protein, you’ll get a nice, well-rounded mix made from:

  • Peas
  • Chia seeds
  • Quinoa
  • Hemp

In addition to these potent ingredients, Amazing Grass also contains:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Alfalfa grass
  • Acai berries
  • Goji berries
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet potato

As you can see, when I said it was more of a meal replacement than a simple protein shake, I meant it.

A large tub of Amazing Grass Protein Superfood will give you around 20 servings.

The smaller container comes with approximately 11.

Each serving provides you with 20 grams of protein.

Additionally, you’ll get all the nutrition from the other ingredients as well.

In particular, Super Grass packs a punch when it comes to vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron and calcium.

Taste and Texture

Amazing Grass Protein Superfood comes in a wide variety of flavors.

You can choose between:

  • Original
  • Chocolate peanut butter
  • Chocolate peppermint
  • Peanut butter
  • Pumpkin spice
  • Pure vanilla
  • Rich chocolate

Personally, I’ve only tried the Original, Chocolate peanut butter, and pure vanilla.

The latter two are a bit on the sweeter side, but still palatable.

They mix really well with pure almond milk, which makes for a slightly-creamy texture that’s hard to resist.

Just adding water works as well, though the shake will taste blander than some of its competitors.

You can definitely pick up some hints of “green” in the aftertaste.

However, it is not overpowering in any way.

The Original flavor contains no stevia.

So, if you’re not very fond of the special sweetness it gives, this will be a viable alternative for you.

It has a mostly neutral flavor, with a slight hint of “green”, just like the others.

This is what you should get if you plan on blending your powder with fruits or other foods.

Overall Verdict

4 stars rating

Amazing Grass Protein Superfood is perfect if you’re looking to get some extra nutrition in with your protein.

As a pure muscle-building blend, though, it doesn’t quite reach up to the best of the best.

This is because of the slight “green” aftertaste and the higher price point.

Still, given the ingredients list, these small drawbacks are understandable and most likely unavoidable.

If you can look past that, Amazing Grass is a solid pick if you want a healthy meal replacement and protein boost in one simple shake.
